The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 by shootout in snowy conditions at the NHL’s Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor today.
The crowd of 105,491 – who seemed to be having a great time despite sub-zero temps for over four hours – set a world record for the largest attendance at a hockey game, beating a certified total of 104,073 in 2010 at The Big Chill event between Michigan and Michigan State at the same venue.
The world famous stadium is a sunken bowl design; the site was an underground cave 50 million years ago.
Hopefully for the Canucks-Senators game on March 2, BC Place can get the roof open a little quicker than that.
